Fashion trends to make you head and shoulders above the rest

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Sleek, straight and slick are the three words best to describe last seasons hair and make-up fashion trends. Manes were more high maintenance than ever before and on the catwalks we saw an abundance of straight cuts, hard edges and sleek ponytails. And too, faces were minimal. Bleached eyebrows, barely there skin and banc eyelids were the talk of fashion town. But fast forward six months and its time to get a whole lot messier with a few hair tweak-ments.

Long haired lasses endured a winter taming their locks with serums and straighteners to be part of the 90′s grunge inspired look. With liquid liner in hand, the look was like stepping off the tour bus with Alanis Morrisette or PJ Harvey in her heyday. For Spring Summer 2011, those with long hair are being urged to get with the latest hair fashion trends and pick up a hair of triple barrel wavers. Working in finger length sections in an ad-lib way press the hair into waves. Finish off with some shine spray and you will be grapevining back to the 70′s in a glamorous Jerry Hall inspired fashion before you know it. A less severe kohl all the way round the eyes will give you that true disco diva look.

Kiera Knightly-esque short and neat blunt crops are now last year’s fashion trend. Today, stylists are urging gals to grab products to get textured once again. Today’s mussed-up look can easily be achieved as long as short curls have yet to grow out from last season. And if you fancy adding a beach party vibe to your mussed-up hairdo, subtle highlights are the way to go.

Block colouring hit the headlines after making waves in the fashion world, and now block eye shadow in perfect purples, punchy pinks and canary yellows are a must for 2011. And the 70′s fashion trend has also taken over the hairdressing world. Ponytails that were so recently tied up and slicked with a can of hair spray are now being fixed with one-tie silk scarves. As for scarf colours, blondes wear bold blues well whilst brunettes are flattered by leafy greens and citrus oranges.

So it’s clear that in 2011, the fashion trend isn’t just about the right look for your wardrobe, it’s also about the right look for your face and hair.

‘Tee’ parties: Men’s Springwear

Monday, May 9th, 2011

As spring replaces winter, coats are thrown off revealing t-shirts once again as the focus point in designer fashion for men. With a springtime nip still lingering in the air, layering chunky knits over the centre piece is the perfect way to take advantage of the designs available this season before the summer months take hold.

The t-shirt, undoubtedly an item of simplicity, is effective nonetheless and versatile as a layering foundation for any outfit. It crosses weather boundaries with ease as a stand alone item or matched with top-layers and transcends formality restrictions with the swift addition of smart trousers and an overlying jacket. The t-shirt itself is a blank canvas for variety, coming in pattern or plain, an array of necklines (v-neck, crew neck, scoop neck, Y-neck or granddad, to name but a few) and different-length sleeves, the male t-shirt is truly a must-have item.

This spring the male t-shirt has been drafted in to express a nautical element of fashion inspiration. No garish buttons or fringed lapels; this season the seafaring mariner is a rough and ready working sailor. Norse Projects have delivered a simple but effective blue and white tee that embodies the look, while Libertine-Libertine, Vivienne Westwood and Sixpack France all reference anchors, pirates, portholes and ropes in their designs. Armor-Lux and YMC (You Must Create) twist the classic Breton stripe with bold dashes of red and blue stripes with differing size bands.

If homage to the ocean waves is not your cup of ‘tee’, then there are many more men’s fashion styles to choose from in the coming seasons, including striking slogans from Jack & Jones and the amusing musings of Second Son. Tribute tees to our favourite famous faces are also a popular choice this spring by the likes of La Redoute and Ringspun, while flying the flag for patriotic designs are Religion, River Island and Ben Sherman. Brand recognition is also strong with the self promoting slogans of Diesel, Superdry, Polo by Ralph Lauren and Pretty Green by Liam Gallagher.

Heavily patterned and eye-catching designs come from the new Glass range, causing a buzz with their inspirational range designed by up and coming graphic artists, wannabe designers are encouraged to send their own ideas into Glass Boutique, the online outlet. If you prefer the plain t-shirt then why not look to Won Hundred’s reversible tees, two looks for the price of one and an essential for any holidayers this spring.

The t-shirt has not only stood the test of time as a major fashion staple in men’s designer wear, but it continues to be reinvented and redesigned in fresh and fun ways. While fashion may totter between different cuts and colours and preference for plain over pattern may swing, our love for the common t-shirt will remain a constant throughout.

T-shirts have been versatile items of men’s fashion as they are practical, useful and trendy and can put with pretty much anything. Penfield are just one of many brands stocked by Glass Boutique, why not check them out

The lengths I go to fit into a Primark bikini

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

Unlike many women, I find exercising to be oddly pleasurable. In fact, the pleasure I get is second only to clothes shopping. A friend and I even enrolled in a boot camp to help get our bodies into shape for the coming summer holidays and festival season. However, we soon found out that we were far from prepared for the gruelling battering our bodies were about to take.

It was just last weekend, and my friend and I were in Primark perusing the bikinis and imagining how good we were going to look in them once the impending boot had camp got our bodies beachwear fit. At the boot camp, we clutched our mini-towels, roll mats and water bottles and joined a parade of women all equally set on fitting into their Primark bikinis.

After having our legs, arms, waists, hips and busts measured, our drill instructor – sorry – fitness instructor barked at us to get ready for a seriously high-impact blast session. I didn’t know it then but it would become the fat-blasting workout to end all fat-blasting workouts.

I had exercised to get ready for my Primark bikini body last year, working hard at the gym four nights a week, but nothing like how hard our boot camp leader, or should I say sergeant, worked us that night. Fifteen minutes in and my friend and I looked like we had been baked I an oven on high – sweaty and red faced – attractive?! Determined to get into the Primark bikini’s we had lusted after just days before we carried on and with the bit between our teeth we completed the class, ready to for mild resuscitation shortly afterwards.

Now, nobody said that getting into shape for the summer hols was going to be easy, but what kept us going was picturing ourselves tanning our future svelte hips and pert bums in any of Primark’s stunning bikinis.

The next day a kind of smugness overtook me when I realised I wasn’t in any pain. That smugness duly disappeared when on day two I awoke in such agony that even my eyeballs hurt. Right now, I’m dreading my next boot camp session and wondering whether my Primark bikini is worth all the torture of getting into shape. However, it is nice to know that if I do dodge my next session, at least I’ll still look great on the beach because those beautiful Primark bikinis thankfully come in all shapes and sizes.
